2019 Women in Wellness Event

New ideas and energies abounded at the New York American Spa Women in Wellness Leadership Conference on March 12. In New York City,  Spa Industry leaders, directors, entrepreneurs and more gathered to empower, embolden and guide female leadership.

Melissa Terranova, Director of Spafinder Sales states “The conference was filled with impactful presentations celebrating women and helping us to be the best versions of ourselves”

Spafinder hinges our business on providing quality services to both men and women in the Spa Industry as well as Spaistas. Female owned businesses a large subset of our spas and many of our customers are women. To stay atop of relevant topics within this industry, we make it a goal to stay informed on wellness topics, leadership and overall empowerment in this funnel.

Topics ranged from Financial advice to personally motivated quests such as, How to Let Go of Perfectionism and Nurturing Diversity in Workplace Environments. Breakout sessions allow attendees to further collaborate on different ideas and goals.  Most importantly, the event invites like minded female leaders to meet and connect with other women in similar roles. Women have long championed wellness in their homes and workplace. Events such as these allow us to broaden the nationwide footprint of wellness.

CAMILLA Makes Its Swim Week Debut

Australian swimwear brand CAMILLA went big for their first Swim Week by hosting two events over the weekend. While we loved their Fashion For Breakfast takeover at Soho Beach House, the CAMILLA Beach House at Faena gave tangible insight into the brand’s lifestyle stance, connecting its vibrant prints and adventurous spirit to beauty and wellness components. Guests could get their hair primped and makeup retouched, or opt for energy rebalancing via sound bowl healing by Faena’s Tierra Santa Spa. CAMILLA’s stunning Jambo, Jambo! collection was also on display.

1 Hotel South Beach’s Wellness Week

The 1 Hotel South Beach continued its commitment to wellness by overlapping their Wellness Week with Swim Week. The three-day event featured  morning and early evening yoga sessions, as well as meditation, bootcamps and core classes.

Monday Swimwear Launches Activewear

Natasha Oakley and Devin Brugman, co-creators of A Bikini A Day, debuted their activewear line, Monday Active, during Swim Week. The monochromic pieces were on display during a joint, healthy brunch hosted with Niin at Soho Beach House. The new brand extension sat pretty next to the already popular Monday Swimwear items. The duo also hosted a beach fitness class on Sunday morning and Fashion For Breakfast chat at Soho Beach House on Monday morning.

Escape Miami

The fourth year of Escape Miami meant loads of swimwear shops, boutiques, and beauty stops, including lash applications and mini facials hosted by Taradise. Guests also enjoyed a braid bar by Blo and makeup applications by Beauty For Real. Liquido, a swimwear and fitness apparel brand, had a strong presence in preparation for their forthcoming Hollywood, Florida shop via deeply discounted separates and leggings in the swag bags.

Pokémon Go Is Tricking People Into Exercise

pokemongoMillions of adults (including Spafinder Wellness 365 staffers, this image was taken in our office!) are reliving their childhood through the new Pokémon Go mobile application, which allows people to catch the iconic characters in real time through an augmented reality experience. A recent USA Today article explains the logistical details and also highlighted the ironic physical phenomenon attached to the app: “[It’s] Ironic that a pastime chastised for keeping people indoors is responsible for pushing players to explore their outdoor surroundings. Because the mobile game requires players to search nearby parks or neighborhoods for Pokémon, people are walking.” They also featured reactions from the Twitterverse.

@morganhhart: “Pokemon go got more kids to do exercise in 24 hours then Michelle Obama did in 8 years.”

The Guardian interviewed a few loyal app users; some confessed the app caused them to walk more than they ever would while also interacting with dozens of people also playing the game.

“I would say there were several hundred people, and easily 90-95% were playing the game,” says Shafa. He could tell who was playing through a combination of snooping at their phone screens and watching them waft their devices around in the air.

Like Rossi, Shafa has been playing the game since its release. He has caught 200 Pokémon, although in a show of benevolence, he has released more than 130 back into the wild. Shafa wears a pedometer and says he walked 12,000 steps on Sunday in his quest to add more Pokémon to his roster – far more than his usual 3,000.

As more and more users mention upswings in their mindset and mood, the news source raised the question, “Is Pokemon Go good for your health?” Check out the video report here. Tweet us and share what you think @spafinder.

group yoga outside vancouver

Global Wellness Day (#GWD) is not one of those holidays that are made for grabby headlines (think National Anything Day): It was founded as an international non-profit committed to spreading wellness awareness. To get to know its origins and founding principles better, read up on it here. Then come June 11, grab a friend and visit one of these GWD-specific activations: They’re all free and open to the public.

NATIONWIDE

Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts: We had a hard time finding a Four Seasons property that wasn’t participating in Global Wellness Day. A quick search on the brand’s press room site yields over 70 GWD results. In Austin, Texas, they are partnering with Lululemon; In Santa Barbara, paddleboarding and juice samplings are happening; and in Orlando, a drum circle and yoga are taking place. We also caught listings in Atlanta, Seattle, and Los Angeles.

Mandarin OrientalMandarin Oriental’s international outposts are all participating in individually programmed GWD events: Stateside, look out for activations at their New York, Boston, Miami, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Washington DC locations.

EAST COAST

Massachusetts: The HarborView Health Club will celebrate its grand opening on Global Wellness Day. The new spot will be cooking up BBQ, giving out health education books, and offering face painting.

WEST COAST

CaliforniaAn all-day wellness expo is taking over Imperial Beach for GWD. The activation is overflowing with programming that includes cooking demos, fitness classes, and guided meditations.

OregonIn Grants Pass, the Club Northwest fitness and recreation center is opening its doors to the public. The family-friendly events include a Grower’s Market, morning kids’ dash, and more!

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne and Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove are both celebrating GWD. On Key Biscayne, The MIAMI Institute and Florida Spa Association are hosting the activities, which include a beach walk, guest speakers, and spa exclusives. Down in Coconut Grove, yoga, Pilates, and aqua aerobics classes are scheduled throughout the day, as are limited time spa deals.

In Downtown Miami, yogis can visit The Langford rooftop for a complimentary yoga session led by Gaby Quintana. Once class concludes, participants will enjoy cold-pressed juices and plant-based bites by Manna Life. RSVP to rsvp@workshopcollective.com is required. BYOM (Bring Your Own Mat)
