Soak Up The Summer with 5 Easy-to-Market Services

Summer is the perfect time to remind your clients (and would be clients) about new twists on spa treatments that will help them re-discover their summer beauty. And with a little creativity and marketing magic, these summer treatments can also add some sparkle to your bottom line.

Everyone loves new seasonal colors and the polish palette for this summer is bold and bright. Use your social media channels or newsletters to highlight shades like luscious lavenders, lemon-limes, slime greens (yes, we said slime) delectable blues and pinks and new polishes with gold flakes. Invite your clients to a posh polish party and treat them to a discount on a bonus service when they try a new shade. We think a polish party would be an instant hit with mommies and daughters.

When it’s swimsuit and shorts time, cellulite anxiety creeps up. Spafinder readers tell us they want to lose their cellulite but aren’t sure what treatment is best for them. Enter your spa:  Share your knowledge about various options in your social and e-communications. Or invite your clients to a cellulite information session and discuss the pros and cons of each cellulite treatment. (Serve healthy mock-tails or a little bubbly and offer a discount on a future service.)

As spa professionals, we all know a hydrafacial is an excellent summer treatment for sun-damaged skin that needs both hydration and exfoliation. It’s also a good antidote for skin that is dry, clogged and irritated after too many heavy moisturizers.  Invite your clients and social followers to book a series of hydrafacial treatments–and be sure to explain their unique benefits.  Also, it’s a good idea to offer an incentive that encourages your best customers to book a hydrafacial once a month. Click here for ideas for your social channels or newsletter.

Hair removal

Whether your spa offers waxing, threading, sugaring or laser services, you know hair removal is a hot item in the summer. Since your clients are already booking a treatment, now is the time to increase repeat business. Consider offering discounts for multiple bookings or perks such as a topical pain relief for no extra charge. And think about extending your hours and increasing your staff during high volume months.

Body Wraps

Body wraps can be an excellent summer beauty fix, both for your clients and your bottom line. And since many body wraps can help clients lose a few inches before a special event, they are a natural fit for promotions that spotlight beauty services for weddings and special summer events. Before and after testimonials are persuasive, as is factual information about different types of wraps. This could also be a good time to hire a social media expert–who could be a student–to jazz up your posts and increase your followers.

Spafinder Staffers Do Miami Spa Month: COMO Shambhala Urban Escape

We Accept Spafinder Wellness 365 Gift Cards BadgeSpafinder Staffer: Aimee Schmalzle, VP of Marketing

Miami Spa Month Location: COMO Metropolitan, Miami Beach

Service Received: Dr. Hauschka Holistic Facial

Aimee’s take on the spa:The location is a bit farther north than all of the South Beach action: This helps create a feeling of calm, yet it is close enough to the action to get the best of both worlds. The spa is spread across two floors, so it is a bit awkward to navigate at first. There is a steam room, outdoor relaxation area with a creek view, experiential shower, and rooftop therapeutic whirlpool with an ocean view. The shining star of the spa is the whirlpool overlooking the ocean: It is quite large and co-ed, so it is also a fun choice for a date. The scent of the spa is special; a mix of floral and lavender that is very appealing. The staff is very sweet and accommodating. COMO serves a ginger and honey tea that is delicious and refreshing: The ginger was stronger than most ginger teas [I have tried], creating a nice burning sensation as I drank it. You can feel your insides cleansing! Yum.

COMO is a very organic spa that is into traditional methodologies. My facial featured Dr. Hauschka’s products, including the rose moisturizer and cleansing milk. Dr. Hauschka’s products are not aggressive, but smell lovely and are great for someone who prefers natural products or who may want a less intense facial. I use Retina-A, so the combination [of products and service] was perfect as it didn’t further irritate my skin. In fact, it calmed the effects of the Retin-A. I’d recommend the facial for people with sensitive skin. There was also a lymphatic drainage technique that involved facial massage and the use of brushes, which was surprisingly relaxing: It felt dreamy. Once completed, my skin felt supple and moisturized.

Some things to note: You’d need to leave the spa area for a bite to eat. To park, there is a $15 valet or street parking nearby. The location is good for Miami Beach locals or someone staying on the beach.”

Spafinder Staffers Do Miami Spa Month: Lapis, The Spa At Fontainebleau

We Accept Spafinder Wellness 365 Gift Cards BadgeSpafinder Staffer: Sabina Uddin, Marketing Coordinator

Miami Spa Month Location: Lapis, the Spa at Fontainebleau

Service Received: The Triple Cleanse Facial

Sabina’s take on the spa: “What an amazing spa! This is the kind of place where you could spend the entire day relaxing and enjoying all the fantastic amenities. They also have a wide array of yummy spa products, swimwear, and fitness apparel for sale at their spa entrance boutique, as well as cosmetics.

From the moment I checked in at Lapis for my Triple Cleanse Facial, I was treated like a queen and instantly felt a calm come over me as the subtle meditation music played and warm spa lighting filled the space. The ambiance made me forget the stress of the outside world. Marta welcomed me to the facility and provided me with my soft, oversized robe and comfy flip flops. Once settled in, Marta gave me a spa tour while explaining the benefits of all the amenities and adding tips on how to enjoy all the little extras they offer—Lapis will even dry your swimsuit for you before you leave! The locker rooms are clean and spacious, providing plenty of privacy and every product or care item you could need.

Lapis’ sprawling facility has a luxurious, peaceful vibe and features co-ed as well as private areas. I spent time exploring the extensive water elements, mainly gravitating towards the Rain Tunnel where multiple jets shower from above at differing temperatures and pressures. Once finished, I waited in the relaxation area where I had a delicious cup of organic herbal tea and nibbled on snacks.

Ten minutes before my treatment, Marta escorted me to the elevator to the upstairs treatment area. Shortly after that, my esthetician Jenny greeted me with a warm smile and took me to my elegant treatment room with cozy lighting and a heated bed. Jenny was friendly and informative as she explained how she would tailor the products to my skin’s needs, thus ensuring the utmost comfort and results. She described the benefits and ingredients in each product through each step of the Triple Cleanse Facial. At the end of my treatment, she provided me with skin care recommendations and product information to maintain my glow. My skin felt hydrated and baby soft!”

Spafinder’s Spa Lovers Do Miami Spa Month: The Ritz-Carlton Spa Coconut Grove

Spafinder Spa Lover Miami Spa Month Location: The Ritz-Carlton Spa Coconut Grove

Service Received: Heavenly Hour

Spafinder’s take on the spa:  “For Miami’s Spa month, I decided to enjoy one of many massages offered within this tranquil oasis. Nestled just a few blocks away from the marina, this secluded gem is a reprieve for knotted backs and tense muscles. Traffic, slow drivers, you name it—the day of my massage Murphy’s Law seemed in full effect: Nevertheless, the staff kindly greeted me, assailed my concern for running late and then led me to the changing room. Once I’d managed to change into my newly acquired terry cloth robe and sip some cucumber lemon infused water in the relaxation room, my masseuse, Maria, swept me away to a dimly lit sanctuary. The sound of chimes served as background noise as she eased away the remnants of daily computer sessions, too much Miami driving, and less than perfect posture. Maria used hot stones to loosen my muscles further. After 50-minutes, I felt like hitting replay. I arrived in a flurry and left in a daze. As the name implies, it was a heavenly hour of kneading, exotic oils, and deep relaxation! Next time, I’ll bring some girlfriends to lounge by the pool and enjoy a full spa day.”

Spafinder Staffers Do Miami Spa Month: Elemis Day Spa

We Accept Spafinder Wellness 365 Gift Cards BadgeSpafinder Staffer: Lisa Thapa, Manager, Marketing Services

Miami Spa Month Location: Elemis Day Spa

Service Received:  BIOTECH Skin Resurfacer

Lisa’s take on the spa: “Elemis Day Spa is ideal for those looking for a non-hotel spa experience but a memorable massage, facial, or salon service away from the beach. Located in Coral Gables, Elemis features a calming room with snacks and beverages, and champagne or wine is available after treatments. Soft instrumental music creates a calming ambiance suitable for quick visits or extended pitstops. I received a BIOTECH facial, which is available year-round, but upgraded for Miami Spa Month: The limited-time add-ons include a scalp massage, paraffin wax, and credits towards Elemis products. BIOTECH is a virtually new technology for Elemis. Five types of facials can be done using this technology. My specialist Kayla began with a skin consultation discussing problem areas those of concern. She was extremely knowledgeable! Kayla gave me easy tips and tricks on daily skincare, too. She was very professional and friendly and put me completely at ease. I walked away with my skin feeling as smooth as silk! I would recommend Elemis Day Spa to anyone who wants to try something new, have a facial personalized to their skin type, and for those with sensitive skin.”

Spafinder Staffers Do Miami Spa Month: Exhale Spa At The Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour

We Accept Spafinder Wellness 365 Gift Cards BadgeSpafinder Staffer: Christi Schaufler, Vice President, Corporate Sales

Miami Spa Month Location: Exhale Spa at The Ritz-Carlton Bal Harbour

Service Received: Magic Facial

Christi’s take on the spa: “Do you believe in MAGIC!? After my visit to The Exhale Spa, I sure do! Five-star luxury service! From the moment I walked in and was greeted by the Spa Director to the moment I left the building, I was impressed with the level of service provided. The valet parking was easy and inexpensive with the spa service validation.  I was walked directly to the elevator and shown to the spa by a very nice gentleman. I was greeted in the spa with a tour of each part of the facility, including the relaxation rooms, the fitness rooms, and the outdoor terrace overlooking the gorgeous blue waters. The locker rooms were quaint but had all of the amenities you could hope for. As I lounged around the relaxation room waiting for my service, there was fruit-infused water along with delicious almonds to snack on. If I wanted to, I could have had a warm neck wrap, but opted to check out the terrace for a few minutes and look at the water. Up next, Margo the aesthetician who was going to be giving me the Magic Facial greeted me and asked about my experience so far. She has to be one of the most pleasant and happy people I have met.  We made our way to the treatment room where there was a great view of a few palm trees and the water (check out my view in the photo below).  She walked me through the entire treatment, including what to expect each step of the way. My Magic Facial treatment was going to be 90-minutes, so I was in for a real treat. It was the best of the best in technology and products all implemented by Margo—talk about someone who is full of skincare knowledge! I cannot say enough wonderful things about her. I was beyond relaxed as she went through the different steps. I left glowing; my skin never felt better, and a few days later I am still benefiting from the service. Margo was honest, knowledgeable, and made me feel like a superstar. I would highly recommend a visit here; the service, the location, and the staff are ideal for anyone looking for a relaxing and enjoyable day. If you have time, take full advantage of the facility, including the steam-room and sauna. I will be back!”

Blissed Out In Mexico

By Wendy Altschuler

I knew my massage would be good when I entered the new Spatium at Vidanta Riviera Maya. I walked past unique sculptures and bright Mexican art, through the hydrotherapy room—complete with a Jacuzzi, plunge pool, steam room and heated loungers, to a private casita where my treatment would take place. The masseuse was so gentle and rhythmic that initially I thought the massage wouldn’t be effective—I’m a gal that loves firm pressure so that my body really feels “worked” and detoxified. After awhile I stopped focusing so keenly on her touch and began listening to the calming sounds of the wind and the Mayan jungle full of tropical mockingbirds and Chachalaca Vetula birds just outside. What happened next was something that I’ve rarely experienced. I stayed in a space that felt like I was between awake and dreaming—completely aware but also completely blissed out.

This magical woman then gave me a mud mask and she salt scrubbed my feet and legs. Once clean, she began the reflexology and foot massage with tuning forks, something that I’ve never tried before. I felt the vibration ripple up my feet and legs, which seemed to provide a certain energy and rejuvenation that I could actually feel. She methodically pressed the wishbone-shaped tool into certain calculated spots on the bottom and sides of my feet and into my calf muscles, bringing new life into my gams and entire body.

mexico, salt cabin, vidanta riviera maya, spatium

The service ended with a light thumping on the large gong, and tinkering on some chimes, bringing me back into attentiveness but the experience wasn’t over. I was led to a stunning halotherapy salt cabin (the first of its kind in Mexico), a private room full of singing bowls, bells, soft lighting and rose petals (and a yellowed paperback of Michael Jordan). While sitting in this warm room, I inhaled salt particles, iodine, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chloride, iron and copper, all of which are said to be essential for good health and functioning.

Walking the wooden path back toward my room (and reality) was pure joy post treatment. I felt more at peace and full of life than I’ve felt in ages. Indulging in a spa treatment, especially while on vacation, is a way to de-stress, be kind to ourselves and make an important and necessary space for rest and relaxation.

In Spain, A Spa Treatment With Wine

By Peggy Sijswerda

Any sentence that includes the words wine and spa gets my attention. Which is why I couldn’t wait to visit Spain and try the new “Spa Sommelier” experience at Santuario Spa and Wellness, located near Valladolid in a luxurious wine estate called Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine. The estate is an ancient abbey that has been painstakingly renovated and transformed into a five-star luxury hotel. When my husband and I arrive, we pretend to be lord and lady of this grand estate, and that’s exactly how the staff treats us.

Santuario Spa opened in 2015 to rave reviews, and I can see why. The decor mirrors the architecture of the abbey—huge stone walls and soaring ceilings—yet the spa maintains a warm, welcoming vibe. After unpacking, Peter and I are ready for our first two treatments, including an age-defying facial and La Sélection du Sommelier, the massage I’ve been waiting for.

“Would you like to taste some wine?” asks Sonal Uberoi, the Spa Sommelier, after Peter and I change into fluffy robes. She pours a splash of LeDomaine White, a refreshing blend of mostly Sauv Blanc with citrus and oak notes. An award-winning red follows—Selecion Especial, a spicy, rich blend of Tempranillo, Cab Sauv, and Syrah. Next, we sample Pago Valdeballon, a deep-red Cab Sauv with fruit and mineral notes.

Decisions, decisions. Which do I like best? I like them all, but choosing is the whole point since each wine pairs with a customized oil blend the therapist will apply during my massage. I finally pick Selecion Especial as my favorite and love the corresponding cedar oil blend, known for its grounding, anti-stress benefits. Peter selects the white wine, and his oil blend—featuring Yuzu, an exotic fruit from Tibet—which is balancing and uplifting.

Uberoi, who created the Spa Sommelier concept, explains that each massage is personalized to match the chosen oil and the wellness needs of the client at that particular moment. “We combine techniques from all over the world to make these massages unique, different, and effective,” she explains. The treatment is all that and more. I feel grounded and completely stress-free when it ends.

Following our blissful treatments, we float to dinner at Refectorio, LeDomaine’s Michelin-starred restaurant, for a culinary journey. Our nine-course tasting menu, a parade of dreamy flavors and textures, is paired with limited production (and amazing) wines from the Winemakers Collection. LeDomaine’s other restaurant, Vinoteca, is also divine. One day for lunch Peter and I share white asparagus simply prepared with olive oil. This decadent asparagus grows in the nearby town of Tudela de Duero and tops any I’ve ever had.

le domaine

We mount beautiful Spanish steeds one afternoon for a horseback ride along the Duero River. The horses are energetic, and when our guide asks if we want to canter, my Palomino glides into a smooth lope. Another morning Peter and I ride mountain bikes on trails bordering the wine estate, and birds serenade us with springtime melodies.

I return for more spa treatments at Santuario, including the Grand Cru, a heavenly two-hour treatment, which features an invigorating grape seed body scrub and a regenerating red grape body wrap. I leave feeling balanced and supple.

Each evening we unwind in our gorgeous suite with windows overlooking the estate grounds and vineyards. The view extends for miles, plotted by rolling hills, green valleys, fertile fields, pine forests, and neatly tended grapevines. Soon bunches of grapes will appear, destined to be transformed into magnificent wines that I hope you may taste one day.

What’s It’s Like To Get Massaged With Corn On The Cob

By Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon

In Mexico, corn has been held sacred by the indigenous Maya for thousands of years, prized for its ability to sustain tribes through periods of food shortage. Stateside, the summer veggie is iconic and packed with vitamins A, B, and E, as well as fiber. (June 11 marks Corn on the Cob day, which means you have a nationally sanctioned excuse to indulge in an ear (or more) of this seasonal staple.) According to Mayan mythology, the god of maize is decapitated at harvest time and miraculously reborn at the start of the crop’s growing season.

You might feel reborn, too, when you try the Bacal Massage, an a-maize-ing therapy (sorry, I couldn’t resist) offered at Tulum, Mexico’s Grand Velas Riviera Maya Resort. The 80-minute treatment begins with a traditional Mayan blessing honoring the elements. First, water was poured over my hands, then heated stones (representing fire) were applied to my neck and shoulders and a wooden bowl of fragrant copal (incense made from the resin of a tree Mexicans use for medicinal purposes) was wafted around my head to cleanse the air.

Next came an exfoliating body scrub made with ground corn and Mexican honey (harvested from the stingless melipona bee, kept by the Mayans for centuries), which my therapist, Maria, applied with long, sweeping strokes. At the start of my treatment she’d set half a dozen ears of raw corn in a cooker to be tenderized in clouds of copal-scented steam, and once I’d rinsed my now-velvety skin clean, I lay back on the table for the corniest rubdown ever.

The bumpy cobs were firm yet yielded slightly as Maria masterfully rolled them over my flesh, from neck to ankles. The best way I can describe the sensation is to say that it felt like being purposefully kneaded with balled fists, but in the most delicious sigh-inducing, muscle-melting way. Within minutes of her expert ministrations, I was transported to that blissful place between consciousness and sleep.

And when Maria finally roused me with a gentle hand on my shoulder, I surfaced content and, if only for a moment, absolutely carefree.

The ancient Mayans would have been pleased.
